QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

Healing takes between seven to ten days. Expect some redness, bruising and swelling. Circumcision complications are rare. Call your doctor if normal urine does not return after 12 hours of the procedure, and/or if there is persistant bleeding.

Circumcision most often takes place within the first two weeks after birth. Circumcision may become more risky if postponed. Adults can be circumcised however the surgery is more complicated.

Circumcision goes beyond religion, tradition and culture and may have health benefits like easier hygiene, decreased risk of urinary tract infections. Visit our Facebook page to read our post-series on circumcision.

A blocked urethra with too much water may increase pain and make passing a kidney stone more difficult. Stay moderately hydrated and contact your doctor.

A urologist is not the counterpart of a gynaecologist. A urologist specialises in conditions relating to the kidneys, bladder, adrenal glands, and urethra. A urologist treats bladder disorders and issues related to pelvic health, amongst other. Thus a urologist has both male and female patients.

Routine bloodtests can reveal early stages of the illness, urine tests can show abnormalities, various imaging tests, like ultrasounds or CT scans, aid in determining the size and structure of the kidney and can show visible damage to the kidney and/or inflammation of the kidney. Sometimes a kidney biopsy is necessary.

Robotic surgery is used in urology for the removal of the entire kidney or segment due to cancer, for kidney tube (ureter) surgery, for the removal of the bladder due to cancer, for prolapse surgery in females, and for the removal of the prostate due to cancer.

During robotic-assisted surgery robotic arms are inserted via small incisions which allows the surgeon to control the surgical instruments to perform complex procedures. Advantages include that it is minimal invasive, less bloodloss, give access to difficult to reach areas, superior visualisation of the surgical area, leads to greater precision and accuracy, and pain is significantly less.
